Back On Topic Friday

So a happy Memorial Day Weekend to one and all.

I am so ready for this afternoon. Back in 1st grade, a TV show debuted that touched my soul. The year was 1979 and I would hurry home to catch the latest episode of Star Blazers, a space opera tale by Matsumoto Leiji that was adapted from the anime called Space Battleship Yamato (1974.)

At the time I didn't know or care that this wonderful groundbreaking cartoon saga was from Japan. What attracted me at the time was that unlike Looney Tunes or Super Friends, Star Blazers had a continuous plot and that meant you couldn't miss an episode or you would be lost. Plus all the  endearing characters like the crusty Captain Avatar and the young hotshot Derek Wildstar were etched straight out of classic Sci-Fi. There was the lovely Nova who was a crush among school children. Although I liked Nova my first anime crush will always be Princess from Battle of the Planets.

Also for all the kids reveling in Star Wars glory was the groovy robot IQ-9. Comic relief was provided by Dr. Sane, a genuinely funny character who never descended to the abysmal depths of Jar Jar Binks.

My main plan for this afternoon is to recapture that youthful time of the after school cartoon block by watching all 5 episodes of Star Blazers. I also plan to start watching Fate/Zero on Netflix streaming, along with a couple more episodes of Attack on Titan. I will begin watching Hi-sCoool! SeHa Girls that takes classic video game consoles and turns them into moe anime girls. Fun times for everyone with that show. Look for full reviews of the shows mentioned in my blog soon.

Speaking of SeHa, I will play some Dreamcast to feed my retro gaming addiction. I have been playing the super fun Dynamite Deka 2 that is a fun beat 'em up where you play a cop who just wants to kick ass and shoot stuff. You can also throw chairs and other various objects at opponents. There is an awesome funny review by Classic Game Room that is on Youtube. Long live Lord Karnage!!

For monster movies, I plan on taking a much needed second look at Toho's The War of the Gargantuas from Honda Ishiro. I will follow that up with another Honda flick called The H-Man.

Well, I have a busy three day weekend already planned out. I will consume mass quantities of pizza and enjoy the good life.

Catch up with me next time.
